Tony Tersigni ties for No. 2 most influential in healthcare; Pat Maryland moves up

Ascension President and Chief Executive Officer Anthony R. Tersigni, EdD, FACHE, is tied for second with 11 other healthcare and business executives in Modern Healthcare’s 2018 listing of the 100 most influential people in healthcare. Patricia A. Maryland, Dr.PH, Executive Vice President, Ascension, and President and Chief Executive Officer, Ascension Healthcare, moved up to No. 46 on the list for 2018; she made her debut last year.

Tony has been included on the list every year since 2005, placing in the top 10 every year since 2014.

Modern Healthcare calls Tony and the 11 others tied for second – including Amazon Founder and CEO Jeff Bezos and Apple CEO Tim Cook – healthcare disrupters, “a select group of stakeholders looking to lead the charge.” President Donald Trump was No. 1 in this year’s list.

“St. Louis-based Ascension has been developing its ancillary businesses related to group purchasing, leadership development, automation, venture capital and other segments that it hopes other systems will use,” Modern Healthcare says. “‘Nothing we do should be proprietary if it can raise the quality of care,’ said Ascension CEO Anthony Tersigni, one of the 12 disrupters.”

In addition to this year’s Most Influential list, Modern Healthcare has also recognized Pat Maryland as a Top 25 Minority Executive as well as one of six to “watch in healthcare” this year.

She “has been at the forefront of pushing Ascension to tackle one of the nation’s most pressing healthcare issues: access to behavioral healthcare,” Modern Healthcare says. “Under her leadership, the large not-for-profit provider developed a behavioral health service line. She’s also spoken publicly and penned opinion pieces advocating for a more coordinated approach to addressing the opioid epidemic.”

Dr. Maryland was also honored as one of the “Most Influential Business Woman” by the St. Louis Business Journal and received the Black Women’s Agenda Health Award during the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's 47th Annual Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C.

“Tony and Pat exemplify our Mission of caring for all with special attention to those who are poor and vulnerable,” said Nick Ragone, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing and Communications Officer, Ascension. “This honor not only shows their national influence in our industry, it also reflects the compassionate, personalized care provided every day by our caregivers across Ascension.”

The Modern Healthcare rankings were determined equally by reader votes and the senior editors of Modern Healthcare.
