Ascension Michigan announces new leader

After an extensive national search, Kenneth E. Berkovitz, MD, FACC, has agreed to serve as Senior Vice President, Ascension, and Ministry Market Executive, Ascension Michigan, effective February 9, 2020.

“Since 2018, Dr. Berkovitz has served as President of Ascension Medical Group in Michigan. In this role, and earlier in his distinguished career, he has demonstrated a commitment to collaboration, a focus on patient-centered care, and the mindset of a true servant leader,” said Craig Cordola, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Ascension. “Dr. Berkovitz is a respected, strategic clinical and administrative leader who has a history of delivering measurable success for large health systems.”

Prior to coming to Ascension Michigan, Dr. Berkovitz served as CEO of the Cardiovascular Institute of OSF Healthcare System in Peoria, Illinois, where he was responsible for strategy and execution, staff development, finance, and management of the system’s cardiovascular service line (CVSL). Previously he held a similar role with Summa Health System in Akron, Ohio.

A board-certified cardiologist and diplomate in interventional cardiology, Dr. Berkovitz earned his medical degree at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Nashville, Tennessee. He completed his internship and residency at University Hospitals of Cleveland and was a Senior Fellow in Interventional Cardiology and Fellow in Cardiovascular Disease at the Krannert Institute of Cardiology at Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis. 

While at Summa Akron City Hospital he received the Service Excellence Award, which recognizes physicians who perform above the 90th percentile nationally in HCAHPS inpatient scores. He was named a Heart Champion in 2007 by the American Heart Association and received the Elite Patient Service Award numerous times as part of Northeast Ohio Cardiology Specialists.
