Joshua Greene, MD, and Cathy Ballenger, Office Manager, with Ascension Medical Group in Anderson, Indiana, helped a young woman with Down syndrome find purpose through volunteering at their office each week. The effort was featured recently in The Herald Bulletin in Anderson, Indiana.

Dr. Greene grew up with two siblings with Down syndrome and wanted a volunteer with the condition when he joined the practice.

“It was always important to me to have that involved in my day-to-day work,” he said. “Everything in the ministry here is about serving everyone, and I think this adds an aspect of that care we don’t normally see in our practice. It reminds me of why we do what we do.”

Emily went through a formal interview process and was brought on as a volunteer.

“She’s just progressively done more each week,” Cathy said. “She’s learning by leaps and bounds.”

Emily and her family are so grateful that she has this opportunity that they nominated Dr. Greene and Cathy for Down Syndrome Indiana’s Star Award.
