Ascension St. Michael’s Hospital in Stevens Point, part of Ascension Wisconsin, recently won the Excellence in Tissue Donation award for the first time from University of Wisconsin Organ and Tissue Donation. With support and encouragement from longtime donor liaison and House Supervisor Sandra Holmes, Ascension St. Michael’s saw a 60 percent tissue consent rate in 2018, impacting the lives of more than 150 people, with two donor heroes.
Also, Ascension NE Wisconsin – Mercy Campus in Oshkosh won the Gold Award of Hope. Its donation program is led by Dawn Auclair, RN, who has served as the donation liaison for more than 20 years. Dawn is mentoring Renee Ziemer to eventually take over this vital role so she can carry on the tradition of excellence.
In 2018, four out of five eligible patients at Ascension Mercy becoming organ donors. These four donor heroes saved 15 recipients with 20 transplantable gifts, averaging five organs transplanted per donor. Two of these donation opportunities happened only a day apart. The donor families met in the waiting room and still stay in touch.
