Richard Fogel, MD, FACC, FHRS, has been named Chief Clinical Officer (CCO) for Clinical & Network Services (CNS), effective July 1, reporting to Joseph Cacchione, MD, FACC, Executive Vice President, Ascension, Clinical & Network Services.

In this role, Dr. Fogel will be responsible for clinical performance across the national health ministry. In addition to championing quality and safety improvements and practices, he will also oversee the design of flexible physician alignment strategies and service lines. Mohamad Fakih, MD, MPH, Vice President of Quality and Clinical Integration, Ascension, and Jim Palazzo, Vice President, Service Lines, Ascension, will report to Dr. Fogel. Ministry Market CCOs will have a matrixed reporting relationship to Dr. Fogel.

A practicing staff cardiologist and electrophysiologist, Dr. Fogel currently serves as CCO for Ascension Indiana. He has a long history of leadership in Indiana and has also led numerous Ascension committees. He currently serves as Chair of the Ascension Clinical Integration Committee and is a member of the Ascension Clinical Leadership Committee and the Clinical Informatics and Analytics Committee. From 2010-2016, he was the Chair of the Ascension Electrophysiology Affinity Group.

In Indiana, Dr. Fogel is past Chief Executive Officer of St. Vincent Medical Group and former Chair of the Office of the Chief Medical Officer at St. Vincent. In 1992, Dr. Fogel joined Northside Cardiology, one of the founding members of The Care Group, a private cardiology and primary care practice in Indianapolis, as a clinical electrophysiologist. He was instrumental in the development and opening of the St. Vincent Heart Center in Indianapolis.

Dr. Fogel earned his bachelor’s and medical degrees from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. He completed his internal medicine residency and cardiology fellowship at Boston University Medical Center. He completed his two-year electrophysiology fellowship at Boston University Medical Center and St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital. He is a member of the Ascension Leadership Academy and a graduate of the Executive Ministry Leadership formation program.
