A new report by healthcare information and research firm SK&A lists Ascension as the No. 1 U.S. health system by total number of facilities owned or managed. In the latest figures, Ascension passed Community Health Systems in total number of facilities.
“The new ecosystem of healthcare is maturing rapidly,” the SK&A report says. “The integrated customer is moving from uncoordinated to advanced levels of influence, control and financial responsibility. The ranking of the top 25 integrated healthcare systems changes continuously as systems expand their networks and range through provider employment, affiliations and management contracts.”
“Being the largest health system in the SK&A report, reflecting our size and reach, is important to Ascension only because it supports our ability to integrate the expertise and experience of thousands of caregivers across the country to help us meet the needs of those we’re privileged to serve where and how its best for them as individuals,” said Anthony R. Tersigni, EdD, FACHE, President and Chief Executive Officer.
As noted by HealthExec, other systems can be considered the largest using different measures: most hospitals, number of physicians or most nursing homes. “Ascension, however, is one of only two systems to be in the top five in all of those areas, the other being Catholic Health Initiatives,” says HealthExec, which lists the top 25 largest integrated health systems from the SK&A report.
