Ascension’s Tony Tersigni Second Most Influential Healthcare Executive; Pat Maryland Also Makes List

Ascension President and Chief Executive Officer Anthony R. Tersigni, EdD, FACHE, is the second most influential leader of a U.S. health system in Modern Healthcare 2017 rankings of the 100 most influential people in healthcare. Patricia A. Maryland, Dr.PH, Executive Vice President, Ascension, and President and Chief Executive Officer, Ascension Healthcare, makes her debut on this year’s list.

Three Republican U.S. senators who voted against the most recent healthcare reform bill – Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), John McCain (Arizona) and Susan Collins (Maine) – share the top spot in Modern Healthcare’s rankings. Bernard Tyson, Chairman and CEO of Kaiser Permanente, and Tony follow the three lawmakers.

Dr. Tersigni, who has been included every year since 2005, is followed on the list by Paul Ryan, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, and President Donald Trump. Dr. Maryland comes in at No. 93. Earlier this year, as President, Healthcare Operations and Chief Operating Officer of Ascension Healthcare, she was included in Modern Healthcare’s inaugural list of the top 25 COOs in healthcare.

“Even since before the inauguration of President Donald Trump, Ascension had been talking with Republican leadership about healthcare reform,” Modern Healthcare says. “Tersigni reiterates Ascension’s support for 100 percent access and coverage and highlights the national health ministry's push for mental and behavioral health reform.”

Noting Dr. Maryland’s previous Role as COO, Modern Healthcare says she “will continue to lead Ascension’s transition from a volume-based model to one that delivers value to patients and providers. … The system is working to home in on the social determinants of health to implement more patient-centric care and better control population health.”

The Modern Healthcare rankings were determined equally by reader votes and the senior editors of Modern Healthcare.

“By recognizing Tony and Pat, Modern Healthcare’s readers and editors have acknowledged Ascension’s key role in leading the transformation of healthcare,” said Nick Ragone, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing and Communications Officer. “This type or recognition helps us achieve our healing Mission and strengthens our position as an advocate for a compassionate and just society. Inclusion on the list is also an acknowledgement by the editors and readers of Modern Healthcare of the tremendous efforts of all the associates, physicians and volunteers across Ascension, as they provide compassionate, personalized care in the communities we serve.”
