Wall Street Journal Cites Ascension’s Health City Cayman Islands for Innovation

Health City Cayman Islands, the hospital partnership of Ascension and Narayana Health of India, is featured in a new column on healthcare innovation in The Wall Street Journal.

Dr. David Blumenthal, President of the Commonwealth Fund, a national healthcare philanthropy based in New York, cites HCCI as an example of U.S. health systems looking abroad for innovations to impact U.S. healthcare.

“Recently, Ascension, the nation’s largest nonprofit health-care system, has begun experimenting with replicating an Indian approach to cardiac surgery,” he writes. “The Narayana Health System performs coronary artery bypass surgeries of comparable quality to developed nations at a cost of less than $2,000, compared with a typical cost of $50,000 in the U.S.

“Ascension has partnered with Narayana to create a facility in Cayman Islands that will serve patients from North and South America. Based on that experience, Ascension will see whether elements of that innovative model could be transferred to the U.S. mainland.”

Dr. Blumenthal notes that Ascension is among 15 leading U.S. systems that have worked with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement to look for innovations internationally.

Ascension’s international efforts also are featured in the March edition of Good Day Ascension magazine, which is on its way to associates’ home mailboxes. An online version is available here.
