Louis Profeta, MD, an emergency medicine physician at St. Vincent in the Ascension Indiana Ministry Market, has been named by LinkedIn as the "top voice in healthcare" for 2016. It is the second year in a row Dr. Profeta has achieved this recognition. The professional networking site has more than 400 million members across the world, with an average of 160,000 articles published each week.
Dr. Profeta said he is especially proud of his article, "I Know You Love Me – Now Let Me Die," about end-of-life care. He said he heard from thousands of readers who noted that it helped them either have conversations about end-of-life care or let go of guilt on what they should have done. He discussed the overwhelming responses to the article in his post "When Tears Fall at Starbucks."
"I write about the world and the changing tides of life as I see it through the eyes of an emergency physician," Dr. Profeta said. "It (the ER) is the only place in all the world where every single facet of the human experience comes together. From the rich to the poor, old, young, sane, crazy, powerful, desperate, tragic, elated and on and on, they all come here. It's magical."
To determine the "top voice" in a topic, LinkedIn looks at diverse factors, from reader engagement to follower growth. LinkedIn notes that the top authors in this area "highlighted a healthcare industry at a crossroads, one that is under pressure from shrinking reimbursement, an aging population that is also savvier and more informed that ever before, and the uncertain future of the Affordable Care Act."
